US–Canada Cross-Border Vehicle Shipping: Customs & Paperwork

Shipping a vehicle between the United States and Canada requires more than just a trailer—it requires customs documentation, duties, and in some cases a licensed customs broker to clear the border smoothly.

For US-bound imports, the vehicle must comply with EPA and DOT standards, and the importer must file the proper entry with US Customs and Border Protection. The carrier typically provides a bill of lading and may arrange bonded transit.

For Canada-bound imports, the Canada Border Services Agency requires a formal declaration, applicable duties and taxes (including GST where applicable), and compliance with Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Vehicles over 15 years old may qualify for exemptions from some Canadian import standards, while newer vehicles may require a Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) inspection and compliance modification.

Work with a carrier experienced in cross-border enclosed transport. They can coordinate customs paperwork, ensure the vehicle is properly declared at the port of entry, and arrange bonded transit so the vehicle remains enclosed and secured throughout.
